The Language Ladder: A Game-Changer for Communication Partners providing Communication Support for Nonspeaking Students

Updated: Sep 3

"I keep going back to the motor loop and looking what we assume are gestalts and scripting and looking at them with a new perspective." - Communication for Education Course Participant

Communication partners across the country are discovering a simple yet powerful tool that's transforming how they support nonspeaking learners: the language ladder. But this isn't just another educational framework—it's a paradigm shift that's helping educators meet students exactly where they are while opening doors to meaningful communication.

What is the Language Ladder?

The language ladder, featured in our skill building module (Module 11- Communication Practice Strategies), provides a visual framework that revolutionizes how we think about communication progression. Unlike traditional approaches that focus on deficits or "moving students up," the language ladder honors where students are right now while providing pathways for authentic growth.

Think of it as a roadmap rather than a hierarchy. Some days, your student might need support at one level, other days they might surprise you by demonstrating skills you hadn't seen before. The key is flexibility and responsiveness—meeting them where they are in each moment.

Real Impact from Real Educators

The feedback from our participants tells a powerful story:

Kristen, a Special Education Teacher, shared: "The language ladder really helped with this. I plan on using partner-assisted scanning and response tools more frequently in the future. One concept that really stands out to me that I learned in this course is presuming competence. It has changed my thinking to look at how I am presenting activities to the students I teach."

For parents, the impact is equally profound. Christina, a parent and communication partner, explained: "[The] language ladder was the most important piece of information I took from this class. Working with my son who is younger and takes longer to pick up on new items, this helped me understand how to start and move forward with new spelling techniques."

Lindsey, working directly with nonspeaking students, noted: "I liked learning all the aspects and hearing from other non speaking students." She discovered that the ladder isn't just about academic progression—it's about honoring all the ways students communicate and building from their strengths.

Beyond the Classroom: Real-World Application

What makes the language ladder particularly powerful is its practical application across settings. Whether you're a general education teacher adapting assignments, a speech therapist planning sessions, or a parent supporting communication at home, the ladder provides a consistent framework.

Bailey, a 1st Grade Teacher, experienced this firsthand: "This class was filled with information that not only applies to students who are nonspeaking, but all students. I feel I am such a better general educator because I can understand the role of communication partners and can work with them and students to create student success."

The language ladder helps you ask better questions:

  • "Where is my student today in their communication?"

  • "What support do they need right now?"

  • "How can I honor their current abilities while providing growth opportunities?"

  • "Am I meeting them where they are, or where I think they should be?"

The Mindset Shift

Perhaps most importantly, the language ladder represents a fundamental shift in how we view our nonspeaking students. As one participant reflected: "I found the course very helpful in getting me started to work on the letterboard with my son. I learned many valuable tools that took me through the steps on how to achieve success in gaining his trust as well as learning about the nature of why he reacts in the way that he does, so that I can approach him in a more calm and level learning field for both of us." - Lorie, Parent to an Adult Learner

This isn't about "fixing" students or rushing them toward independence. It's about partnership, trust-building, and creating environments where authentic communication can flourish.

Getting Started

Ready to transform your approach to supporting nonspeaking learners? The language ladder is just one of the powerful tools you'll discover in our Communication Practice Strategies modules. This transformational module sets the stage for making all assignments accessible, helping you make real communication possible in any environment.

As Jennifer, a Speech Language Pathologist with years of experience, put it: "If I could snap my fingers and have this course be a requirement for every college student considering a career working with other humans I would do it in a heartbeat."
